Sterling Silver Celtic Cross

This pendant measures about 1.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide. This is the size of the pendant itelf, not including the attached bale or jump ring. The front and back sides of the pendant are the same, so it will still look good if it gets turned around.

This pendant is offered with an 18-inch silver wheat chain, or it can be purchased without the chain at a discounted price if you already have a chain.

The pendant is produced entirely in-house at my shop in Georgia, USA. The .925 sterling silver used is nickel-free and American made. The sterling has been assayed to ensure that it contains at least 92.5% silver. Copper (99.9% pure) makes up the remainder of the alloy.

Lost Wax Casting is an ancient technique going back thousands of years. Though the technique has been refined with time, it is still essentially the same process as it has been for millennia. First a wax or resin master copy of the pendant is created, set within a mould, and then melted away, leaving a hole behind. Then the sterling silver which will eventually become this pendant is heated in a furnace to over 1800°F until it melts. The liquid silver is poured into the cavity left behind by the melted wax. Then, after the silver solidifies, it is quenched, cleaned and carefully polished to a mirror finish.

The bale, which is the piece that connects the pendant to the chain, is also fashioned by hand. A rectangle is cut from a sheet of silver, then heated with a torch and worked with a hammer on an anvil. Once shaped appropriately, it is manually drawn through a steel draw gauge, slowly stretching it and thinning it into wire. Finally, when the wire reaches the right length and width, it is shaped using pliers and soldered at a few strategic points to form the completed bale and permanently affix it to the pendant. Finally it is carefully polished to the same shiny finish as the rest of the piece.
